WHAT IS ALDI?

Aldi is a common discount supermarket chain that is spread across 20 countries with over 10,000 stores franchises. As of 2020, the company is estimated to be worth almost $53 billion. Aldi was established by two brothers, Karl Albrecht and Theo Albrecht in 1946. In 1960, the franchise was separated into two, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.

Aldi Nord is the franchise’s German operation, which is comprised of almost 2,500 stores in western, northern and eastern Germany. Aldi Süd is the franchise’s other German operation and consists of almost 1,600 stores across western and southern Germany. On an international place, Aldi Nord functions all across Denmark, France, the Benelux countries, Portugal, Spain and Poland. In contrast, Aldi Süd functions all across Ireland, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Switzerland, Australia, China, Italy, Austria and Slovenia. The United States happens to be the only country in the world that has both Aldi franchises across it.

Since 1966, both Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have been a separate franchise on financial and professional terms. In the United States, Aldi Nord is acclaimed as Trader Joe’s and Aldi Süd is just called Aldi. However, the premise of either stores remains the same; provide premium products at a discounted cost. In fact, Aldi is an abbreviation for “Albrecht Diskont”.

CAN YOU BUY ALDI STOCK?

While Aldi stock seems rather auspicious to many investors, the truth is that Aldi not a publicly-traded corporation. What this means is that Aldi is a privately-owned corporation and there is no way that you can purchase its stocks. Privately-owned means that the owners of the corporation have a complete authority over it and do not have to depend on on outside investors.

WHO OWNS ALDI?

The parent company, ALDI Einkauf GmbH & Co. oHG, is owned by Siepmann Foundation and some private partner companies. Before his demise in 2014, Karl Albrecht established these companies.
